3D is an extremely old and used medium (YOLT review tomorrow). It got used in a lot of moviesin the 50s with red and cyan. At one point, it got off. Robert Rodriguez wanted to bring back this technology but failed because their movies sucked even though they were commercial success.
Now, ALMOST every movie is being released in 3D, Real D 3D or IMAX 3D. What's the difference? I have no clue.
In my opinion. When the producers shoots the movie in 3D and converts it well, it's a hit. So far, the best 3D ever is the great gatsby, NOT AVATAR!!!!!!!!!!!
Do I like 3D. YES!!!!!! I think that 3D is great and makes the visual stand out. 2 studios that make really good 3D movies are DISNEY and WARNER BROS. Even if some movies are not good, they'll always be visually stunning (Except some minor exceptions) Sony and universal are OK 3D movies. Some movies like MIB3 and The Lorax were stunning in IMAX 3D. But Paramount makes a lot of CHEAP 3D movies. (Last Airbender) Some are good like G.I joe 2 and ST into darkness. FOX movies is a real bummer because when they release their movies in 3D. They're almost nothing visually WOW even if they're 3D is good.
IMAX 3D without a doubt IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I MEAN YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. LISTEN TO THE SCHMOES!!!!! GO SEE PACIFIC RIM RIGHT NOW IN IMAX!!!!!!!!!
I see every single Disney movie in the theaters because they're so visually STUNNING. Next Disney movie, the wolverine.
Warner bros has that technology that everyone doesn't (even Disney) VFX are so good and 3D is awesome. Next Warner movie, We're The Millers (Another bomb)
3D is Worth spending your $$$. But Warner bros and Disney only.
