Metallica: Some Kind of Monster written review

Film: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
Starring: Metallica, Bob Rock, Dave Mustaine

Recently I've rediscovered my love for Metallica, they are perhaps my favourite Metal band. It's also worth taking note that this documentary is about the making of "St. Anger" the bands eighth and probably most hated album. To be honest the album isn't great, it has moments of greatness (The Unnamed Feeling and the Some Kind of Monster edit) but too many shit songs.

The documentary follows Metallica through the ups and downs of making the St. Anger record. James spends almost a year in rehab for alcohol abuse and Lars, Kirk and producer Bob Rock try to begin the writing/recording process. When James returns from rehab work begins and the band soon begins falling apart. Constant arguing between James and Lars, a lack of bass player (Jason Newstead had left by this point) and tight recording restraints. It paints a good picture of why St. Anger as an album sounds the way it does. It's a shame the album wasn't amazing because this documentary is, it really shows a band on the brink of destruction and how they overcame their problems. (Basically banging the shit out of a tin-can sounding snare and yelling abuse down a microphone....then recording it, and selling it to the public). For what it's worth I give the album 6/10, it's not good, but it's not horrible either. I will say if you're in a bad mood this album is perfect for you!

As for the documentary; I'm giving it:

8/10, maybe in my Top 5 favourite documentary's. If you like Metallica or music in general it's a great watch!
