Madea: "I'm Madea! Ma to the damn D-E-A!"
For the first 65 minutes of Madea Goes To Jail, Madea is seen for a total of 15 of those minutes. The movie would have been more appropriately titled, "Tyler Perry's The Story Of The Urban Prostitute." However, The film balances 2 story-lines well. Yes, Madea is an easy character to dislike, but she's actually entertaining in her own right. Had she be put in a movie focusing on said Madea going to said jail, it would've worked out for the better.
Madea(Tyler Perry) escapes another trip to the jailhouse after the officers that arrested her, forget to read her the Miranda Rights. However, she gets put in Jail after a run in with an unruly customer at Kmart. Meanwhile, a prostitute named Candace(Keisha Knight Pullman) has been undergoing some legal troubles as well. She eventually seeks the help of an old friend, turned lawyer, Joshua(Derek Luke), but gets her nowhere as she is eventually thrown into the same jail as Madea.
After the aforementioned 65 minute mark, the plot becomes incredibly overstuffed, to the point where, originally, Madea wasn't supposed to be in this movie. However, the films two story-lines are quite engaging, for the most part. I think the film spends too much time on the prostitute story-line. The film can actually be really funny. Madea's not a character made for everyone, but, if you're willing to take her character for how she is, then I think you can have some fun with her. I think the movie succeed's at what it wants to do. If you want, both a comedy, and a drama rolled into one, Then this film is the answer to that. I say give it a chance.
