The World's End (2013) Film Review

The Worlds' End is the third and final film in Edgar Wright's Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy, The first two entries being Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. Both Brilliant films. The World's End lives up to the legacy of those two films by being a parody of Sci-fi action films, but with a unique twist. British comedies can either fall completely flat or be a successful win. The World's End falls into the latter of the two categories. The film following the story of a man who wants to accomplish an event that was left unfinished in his youth.

5 Guys, 12 Pubs, 1 Night, An event that Gary King(Simon Pegg) wants to relive, because when him and his 4 friends did the bar crawl in their youth, they weren't able to finish. So Gary reunites Andy(Nick Frost), Oliver(Martin Freeman), Peter(Eddie Marsan) and Steven(Paddy Consildine) to do The Golden Mile. Starting at The First Post and ending with The World's End. Gary is still living in the past but is still determined to complete this goal.

Gary is the cocky Fast-Talker, able to talk his way out of a situation. The film explains that while Gary can be lovable he can also be a tremendous jerk. There is one of those dead relatives who isn't really dead situation. Gary soon convinces his friends to stay with him during the crawl when they find out that their town of Newton Haven has been taken over by robots. The way they handle the situation when they first find out is hilarious, involving a bathroom brawl.

The film is filled with crafty dialogue that is both smart and funny. At one point during the movie, due to one of the characters saying WTF all the time, Gary shouts out, "What the fuck does WTF mean?!!?" When Gary explains his plan to a hotel clerk, it goes a little something like this, "Tonight, we will be partaking of a liquid - as we wind our way up the golden mile commencing with an inaugural tankard in The First Post, then on to The Old Familiar, The Famous Cock, The Good Companion, The Cross Hands, The Trusty Servant, The Two-Headed Dog, The Mermaid, The Beehive, The Kings Head, and The Hole In The Wall for a measure of the same. All before the last bittersweet pint in that most fateful, The World's end, leave a light on good ladies, although we may return with a twinkle in our eyes, we will be in truth blind - drunk"

This film is an absolute must-see. The comedy is well done, the special effects are well done and overall, The Performances make the film feel real. This is one of the best comedies of the year, seeing the last of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy is both sad but filling at the same time. I have had a blast watching all three of these films. You just don't see movies quite like these being made anymore.
